Overview
The Florida International University in Miami, FL, first approached Gorilla Netting in early 2020. FIU is well known for its Wall of Wind (WOW) hurricane research center, which defies the usual limitations of laboratory tests. The Wall of Wind consists of six industrial fans to test to failure full-sized structures such as site-built or manufactured housing and small commercial structures in hurricane-force winds.
Gorilla Netting worked with Wall of Wind engineers to design a Custom Netted Debris Containment System (enclosure) using a particular type of netting for this project. It was custom-made just for the Wall of Wind facility and had to be strong enough to withstand the hurricane-force winds created by the industrial fans. To complete the project, Gorilla Netting used wood poles and powerline/utility-grade hardware.

Challenge
For any institution conducting large-scale experiments involving powerful equipment like the Wall of Wind (WOW) hurricane research center at Florida International University, the decision to forego installing a Custom Netted Debris Containment System could have far-reaching consequences. Without such a protective enclosure, the risk of debris generated during testing poses a significant threat to the safety of personnel, nearby structures, and valuable equipment. The potential for damage and injury escalates exponentially, as the force generated by industrial fans simulating hurricane-force winds can send debris flying at high velocities, creating hazards that are difficult to control or mitigate.
Solution
To address the critical need for safety and efficiency in large-scale experiments like those conducted at the Wall of Wind (WOW) hurricane research center, Gorilla Netting offered a tailored solution, a custom netted debris containment system. This innovative enclosure is designed to withstand the powerful forces generated by industrial fans, providing a secure barrier that effectively contains debris and safeguards personnel, nearby structures, and valuable equipment.
By partnering with Gorilla Netting to implement the Custom Netted Debris Containment System, institutions conducting large-scale experiments can enhance safety, streamline operations, and maximize research productivity. With a commitment to delivering customized solutions tailored to specific project requirements, Gorilla Netting empowers institutions to mitigate risks, protect assets, and achieve their scientific objectives with confidence.
