DuringAfterKigali Golf Resort & Villas in Kigali, Rwanda needed two new driving range netting systems to protect the nearby roads and pedestrian walkways, following a presidential order. Working for Rwanda Ultimate, EPN, and the resort, Gorilla Netting was awarded the contract to design, engineer, and install both systems.
The challenge
What the build was up against
Rwanda had little heavy equipment, few power tools, and limited safety standards. Moving the steel poles and setting them with the equipment on hand was extremely difficult, and installing hardware on the poles without the usual power tools carried real risk.
The laborers' hand tools were old, worn, and sometimes broken. Local crew members dug pole holes with broken shovels.
What we built
The system we designed and installed
Gorilla Netting installed 50,540 sq ft of #18 1" knotless polyester netting with powerline and utility-grade hardware and wire rope, hung on new steel poles sourced locally by EPN, a local contractor and businessman.
- Worked closely with EPN to source materials and tools locally.
- Sourced the remaining materials, equipment, and tools available in Kigali and adapted the install methods to those limits.
- Trained and supervised the local crew on site on safety protocols and procedures, finishing with no recordable injuries.
AfterThe outcome
What it means for the course and the roadside
The roads and pedestrian walkways beside the range are now protected by two steel-pole netting systems, and golfers have a safer, more durable range with extended play time. The project marked a milestone in Rwanda's investment in golf.
