Overview
The Kigali Golf Resort & Villas Driving Range project was a significant undertaking aimed at improving the golfing experience in Rwanda. The project involved installing two new driving range netting systems to protect nearby roads and pedestrian walkways, following a presidential order. Gorilla Netting, an international netting contractor specializing in sports and barrier netting systems, was awarded a contract to design, engineer, and install the new driving range netting systems.
The new systems included a total of 50,540 square feet of #18 1″ Knotless Polyester Netting and powerline/utility-grade hardware and wire rope. The installation was completed on new Steel Poles sourced locally by contractor and businessman, known as EPN. Gorilla Netting was able to source remaining materials, equipment and tools required and available, locally, adapting to the limited resources available in Kigali, Rwanda.

Challenge
The project faced numerous challenges due to the lack of heavy equipment, power tools, and safety standards in Rwanda. Transporting steel poles and setting them with the available equipment was extremely challenging. Installing hardware on steel poles without the usual power tools posed a significant risk, as there was only so many power tools available. Hand tools used by laborers were old, worn, and sometimes broken, with local crew members using broken shovels to dig holes for the poles. Despite these challenges, Gorilla Netting took pride in showing the local crew members about safety protocols and procedures, and there were no recordable injuries.
Solution
To overcome the challenges, Gorilla Netting:
• Collaborated closely with EPN, a local contractor and businessman, to source local materials and tools.
• Adapted to the limited resources available in Rwanda, using innovative techniques and methods to complete the installation.
• Provided on-site training and supervision to ensure the safety of the workers and the quality of the installation.
Conclusion
The Kigali Golf Resort & Villas Driving Range project was completed successfully, enhancing the golfing experience and ensuring the safety of nearby roads and pedestrian walkways. The new driving range, with its modern steel poles and high-strength polyester netting system, not only extended play time for golfers but also offered a safer and more durable golfing environment. The project’s completion marked a significant milestone in Rwanda’s investment in golf and demonstrated Gorilla Netting’s ability to deliver high-quality netting solutions under challenging conditions, anywhere they are needed.
